Food and drink in Sharm el Sheikh

On the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula in the South Sinai Governorate of Egypt, there is a city called Sharm el-Sheikh. On a promontory that overlooks the Straits of Tiran, the city has an advantageous positioning which motivated its transformation from the small fishing village it was, to the major port, naval base, and centre of tourism it is today. The location also means that fish is a staple aspect of the meals enjoyed by those who live in the city.

This diet is reflected in the many restaurants of the city, the menus in which are dominated by good quality seafood. There are always other meats on offer too, such as kebabs, meatballs in a tomato sauce and roasted chicken. And vegetarian food is on offer too, and in fact a favourite amongst the locals is a dish called kushari, which is a tasty combination of macaroni and lentils.

From the middle of the day, the restaurants of the city open their doors, becoming busiest at around two in the afternoon when most of the inhabitants grab lunch. These same restaurants will push right through to midnight, as many of the city dwellers prefer to eat a late meal while enjoying the night time atmosphere.

From the reviews it seems the best place to look for food is the Sharm Old Market, which is host to upmarket restaurants such as Al-Fanar, a place where you can eat al fresco while enjoying its ample Italian menu. If you want to eat something freshly caught, however, then the best place to eat is About Hamada and Sinai Star, for they are recommended by all who eat there. A good option might be to enjoy an evening stroll along the promenade at Na’ama bay after enjoying a meal at one of the areas fine restaurants.

Despite being Islamic, Egypt has pretty lax laws about the sale of alcohol and its consumption. Soho square is home to some of the city’s most trendy drinking spots, like Oxygen bar and Mandarin bar. If you fancy staying out a little later there are nightclubs too, like Pangaea nightclub, which includes British DJs on its bill every week.

Get Flights to Bangkok

All flights to Bangkok from the UK are out of London Heathrow. British Airways and Quantas offer Bangkok flights, as well as flights to Singapore and Hong Kong, as one of its stopping points on the “kangaroo route” to Australia. Also try Thai Airways and Taiwanese carrier, Eva Airways.Cheap flights to Bangkok are easy to find thanks to healthy competition for this route.

Bangkok has two airports. The Don Muang Airport (DMK) was one of the busiest in south-east Asia. The new Bangkok International Suvarnabhui Airport (BKK) is now open offering the largest enclosed terminal building in the world, a sign that Thailand is keeping up with major destinations in the region. Each airport is less than’ miles from Bangkok, and you can get there by taxi, hired car, or bus.

The best time to visit Bangkok is during the busy season which is during November to March, but you will have to shell out more money to enjoy the experience. Weather conditions are perfect at this time of the year and you will surely have a comfortable stay. The only rider is that you will have to spend almost double charges on flights and hotel accommodation as compared to lean season. During lean season, rates are quite less, but the weather is not conducive as it rains during that time making the weather hot and humid. There is rainfall in this area between June to October.

None of this has stopped Bangkok from luring travelers from all over the world. It offers overwhelming choices in shopping, ancient culture and legendary night life.

The busy capital of Thailand, Bangkok, has been the cultural center for more than two centuries. There is harmony between the villages that are nestled in between the city structures of glass and the stylings of the resturants. The best nighttime entertainment is just a short walk away with everything a shopper’s heart may desire.

Getting around Bangkok on foot is an option, but it is slow. Tuk-tuks and cabs are inexpensive and almost always faster than walking. You also have the option of taking the BTS sky train, subway, bus or river taxi. Drivers are aggressive in Bangkok, so if you want the convenience of your own car, hire a car and driver for the day.

Tuk-tuk fares are negotiated, so never got into one until the fare has been decided. Drivers are known to claim that the attraction you’re looking for is closed, and to steer you to special shopping excursions instead. They may offer to take you to a friend’s shop for free. You should know that such trips are scams, in which the driver receives some of the money you would spend buying overpriced gewgaws.

The Grand Palace, one of Bangkok’s most famous attractions, is the major architectural symbol of the Thai Royal Family and is still used for ceremonies. Some points of interest in Bangkok:The National Museum gives you a great opportunity to learn the history of Thailand.

The Reclining Buddah is 157 feet long and 49 feet high, gold plated and inlaid with mother of pearl on the soles of its feet. The Joe Luis Theater holds unique nightly puppet theater performances. The puppeteers are trained dancers and are also on stage, playing an integral part of the show.Bangkok’s oldest, largest and most famous temple is Wat Pho, Temple of the Reclining Buddha.

River travel is one of mankind’s oldest ways to get around, but the modern and fashionable way to do it in your leisure time is certainly with a nice cruise! Mississippi cruises in particular have been gaining a lot in popularity, both with domestic US and foreign tourists.

A Mississippi cruise can be of many kinds, depending upon the chic, the size of the vessel, the number of passengers, the theme, the cost and the length. The most common distinctions are the deluxe cruises vs. budget cruises, nature vs. city cruises, steamboat vs. modern boat, and the kind (honeymoon, historical, senior, singles, etc).

Mississippi cruises take place on a river that flows through very different areas, from the Rocky Mountains of the US north, in Minnesota, through the great American plains, to the steaming mangrove swamps of Louisiana, passing by several interesting urban areas as well as unspoiled natural environments.

The river’s variety is also reflected in the different kinds of waterborne vessels that can be found on it. As for your floating accommodation, it is probably going to be a comfortable and modern purpose-built ship, but at the higher end of the Mississippi cruise offer there are also beautiful restored steamboats.

There are lots of things to do on a Mississippi cruise even without having an overarching theme to the trip. From just lazing on the deck and watching the scenery go by, to intensive sightseeing and exploration of the river’s many backwaters, activities abound.

It is a truly ideal environment for all kinds of different pastimes, from a romantic night to cocktail parties, singles parties, tracing the steps of Civil War events, a business symposium, or even a marriage!

Sometimes, entire cruises are dedicated to a single event, often with lectures or reenactments aboard. For instance, there are some that concentrate on Civil War events near the river, others looking at the history of steamboats, and also events that relate to the passengers, such as floating veterans’ reunions.

There are several ports of departure along the river, and while the shorter Mississippi cruises tent to be on a return trip from the same port, longer ones are usually one way, with the boat then going back with another cargo of passengers.

So as you have seen, there are lots of different options for Mississippi cruises. Prices also vary a lot, depending on the level of luxury, the amount of included meals, the extra amenities that are part of the package, and of course on the length of the trip.

The Internet has a wealth of information and tips on how to find the perfect river voyage for you. Once you have all the information you need, you will find a wealth of options at travel agencies, either online or directly at the agents’ or cruise lines’ offices.

United Kingdom to Cologne

by Tom Martens

Visitors to Cologne, Germany will have the best luck booking flights from London?s Heathrow Airport, which offers frequently scheduled flights to Cologne, both direct and connecting to Cologne Bonn International Airport. Cologne also offers a public transit system, including light rail, which makes traveling around the city easier for visitors. Cologne is also a city that is very friendly to cyclists, with plenty of bike paths and trails.

Cologne is the largest city in the German industrial heartland of North Rhine-Westphalia and is the fourth largest city in Germany after Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. It is also one of the oldest cities in Germany. Cologne was bombed hundreds of times during World War II, which destroyed the city?s center and drastically reduced its population. Cologne was the site of “Operation Millennium”, the first 1,000 bomber raid by the Royal Air Force. Heavy bombers attacked Cologne with 1,455 tons of explosive. This raid lasted about 75 minutes, destroyed 600 acres, killed 486 civilians and left 59,000 residents homeless. Cologne was such a heavy target by the Allies because Allied forces believed that destroying Cologne would severely damage German morale and force them to surrender. Cologne eventually rebuilt and repopulated and is now thriving.

The landmarks of modern Cologne are the towering Cologne Cathedral, the Farina House (birthplace of the famous Eau de Cologne fragrance), and Cologne’s Roman-Germanic Museum. Most of city was rebuilt in the 1950’s, and the style of its architecture reflects that period.

Cologne’s art scene is legendary. The city is home to at least 30 museums and hundreds of galleries. Cologne attracts thousands of art dealers each year to its trade exhibitions such Art Cologne and the Cologne Fine Art Fair. Museum Ludwig specializes in pop art, including works by Warhol and Dali. It also has one of the world’s top collections of works by Pablo Picasso. The city Cologne is famous for its celebration of the annual reggae Summerjam, the Cologne Carnival, and its gay and lesbian pride festival Christopher Street Day.

There are several television and radio stations based in Cologne. Visitors should also take a go at the Cologne Comedy Festival, usually reckoned to be the largest comedy festival in Europe. And don’t forget the Cologne Carnival, which traditionally begins at 11 minutes past 11 on the 11th of November. Carnival is temporarily suspended during the Advent and Christmas, and then resumes on New Year’s and ends on Ash Wednesday.

Beer is also very popular in Cologne, especially the local brew called Kolsch. Residents and visitors alike drink their beer with traditional German cuisine like sausages, kraut, cheeses and strudels. But it seems beer is more popular than the food in Cologne.

Germany’s fourth largest city has much to offer UK travelers. Enjoy its food, festivals, culture, and architecture. Try its cycling paths. The ease of finding flights to this Germany vacation destination makes it a favorite for UK travelers.

Uncover reduced hotels

by Joe Solestans

People all over the world are searching for the cheapest possible hotels these days. There are many things that determine the cost of a room some noticeable, some not so apparant. This guide should help you.

Possibly the largest price determining factor is the time you make your booking. I think most vital thing here is to book your room well ahead to ensure you get a great deal. Equally, booking a room before or during a major sporting event can have a massive effect on the price you pay.

The key is to work out when a hotel is likely to be under booked. This can usually happen after a major holiday or event when many people are departing the city. For example if you book after the summer holidays eg in September you can make huge savings as most people are unable to take out their children from school for a holiday.

Another money saving point to consider is strange dates. Most hotels for example charge less for a room at the start of the week, usually Wednesday to Sunday. Therefore, for the same money you can get a far more deluxe room. On the flipside, this could work to your advantage as the local attractions too could be charging less for these days as too.

Checking comparison sites can be good but it can also be quite sluggish and tedious, especially if you have to enter the same details in over and over again. I have found its a much better option to use one engine and change the search criteria such as dates and room type to get better deals. Most of the price comparison sites are on the same commission with all hotels and rarely have access to different offers.

The hotel location will play a big role in the price too. Opting to stay at a centrally placed hotel close to the city centre is going to cost a little bit more than one on the outskirts. Utilise Google maps to your advantage here and get a good idea of the travel distance versus price ratio. You don’t want to save money on the room only to pay it out again (and usually more) on travel costs back into the town.

Do you really need the gym and other facilities? Don’t book a hotel with lots of snazzy add-ons unless you’re adamant you’re going to make use of them. The final fee is always bolstered by the availability of additions such as gyms, swimming pools and tennis courts. If you don’t plan to take advantage of something simply go without it and save some money.

I know many people dislike bartering over the telephone but in the case of independent hotels you might find yourself able to talk a good deal if you are determined. Its less likely with a large hotel, these have fixed rates and tend not to speak on per person terms. Personally run businesses are way more approachable though. Give it a try, you might learn a new skill you were unaware you had.

Its clear that there are quite a few things to think about when attempting to book a cheap hotel anywhere. However with a little bit of preparation and some luck you could end up staying in your ideal hotel for a price you can pay.
