The Pork, Peanut and Pine.

by Ian Kleine

Pork, peanut and pine nuts can be appreciated in a festival dedicated to it in Virginia. It is an excellent festival with nothing but only the three p’s, and spending the rest of the day with your family in it, can be described as one of the greater things in life. Welcome to the Pork, Peanut and Pine Festival in Surry County, Virginia.

It is a country festival located in the fields. A family day with nothing but nature, straight drinks, Blue Grass and country style music in the air, and the afternoon sun beating down on you and your family with a warm and comfortable glow. You can find yourself walking lazily under the shades of tall cedar trees that line the River Road. If you’re not comfortable with the sun, there are shades and refreshment stands for your enjoyment and comfort as well.

The barnyard in town is the hub for all exhibits regarding pork, peanut and pine. The festival is mostly headed on weekends so there’s no rush to get right back to work the next day. The venue is most found on Chippokes Plantation State park, where the crepes bloom at the same time. Crepe myrtle trees are some of the more stately trees donwn South, being heat-resistant and hardy. A symbolic tree for the stalwart people of the Southern.

Pine and peanut had always been the cash crops for the Southern folks for almost four centuries. Their art, craft, and culture revolves around these products. Not until ten years after that they had added the red meat into their roster of festivals. Pork has slowly evolved into what we know it is, today.

The County Civil will sell food and refreshments at the site. Craftsmen and registered artisans will also display their wares and products for exhibition and for purchase. Most of the craftsmen are returnees, with some as old as 1976. Regulars, in the local’s terms.

Professional Appearance 3

Honesty is the best policy. When dealing with other craftsmen, either be quiet or say the whole truth. Do not speak half-truths, for they are but whole lies. Honesty also has a big impact on first impressions, as mentioned. Be honest, but don’t be brutal. There is a big difference between honesty, and being tactless. Have etiquette first above anyone else.

Stay inside the space that you paid for, and make sure your booth, table or space is free from gaudy decorations or cumbersome things that could drop into your mate’s table. Make sure it doesn’t encroach nor does it distract. This includes strong scents, loud music, or bright, painful colors.

Stay the whole time that you had paid for. Most buyers usually stay up until the last minute for discounts or because they had just taken off from work. The last hour of the day might be the most stressful you will ever have, but this will also be the prime opportunity for you to have potential clients far more prospective than that which you might have encountered during the day.

Common sense and positive attitude will surely help you in your endeavor for business and keep you away from harm. Avoid negativity and harshness during the day. You need all your pep and your good side to face and talk with both clients, customers and co-peers. Be in the good side of most of your colleagues and recieve win and profit. Help others and expect help from them when you most need it.

Always greet the day and everybody with a smile. Keep an upbeat mood, and be full of positive energy. Think big, create big and win big. Be who you are and be brimming with energy as much as possible (but not to the point where you can be downright annoying and irritating).

Doing your Hobby

by Ian Klein

Sure, you have the tools and the finances needed to start your very own business, but what business will you start? You often hear the terms “You should do what you love and do what you do best” or “Be in the know with what you’re doing, and do it for the sake of craft, and not for money”. Well, let me tell you something, the world is a bit more complicated than that which can be explained by a few quotes.

With the argument of doing something you like versus it’s profitability; let us take the universal truth, most people do not need trinkets and baubles. Perhaps if they have the money to spare, of if they have something they truly love; then they will spend money on it.

Unless your craft includes valued stones and gems (which are all good investments for the future), most people will not give in their money for something that would be seldom used or moderately valuable stuff. In any case, think as to the value and what your product can give to people. Educate and elucidate the use and practicality of your item in order to coax them to buy.

Belief and practicality are different. Your terms of people will buy this, is different from what actual people need. If the mass doesn’t need, or doesn’t like your product, don’t force it. Simply look for other markets that will readily accept your products. Forcing it will merely provoke reports of unintentional harassment in their part and yours.

When you do find your calling, give it your very best, like your business depends on it. Because it does! Improve upon your trade and give people the aura that it’s a good investment. And prove that it is a very good business to settle on. Create networks and socialize to enforce your craft.

How to Taste Wine 2

by Ian Kleine

Swirling is a varied technique used by wine drinkers to coax a shy wine to open up. By spreading the wine against the sides of the glass, the surface area is exposed and the solution is easily exposed to the air. The added oxygen also helps the aroma ‘blossom up’ in to a full-bodied taste.

By swirling, you can also observe the wines viscosity – the rate at which runs back into the solution and whether how long it sticks to the side of the glass. Thick wines are said to be more alcoholic than running wine. It is not a 100% guarantee that the belief is true, but it is a quick reference as to determining the wine’s quality. A ‘thick’ wine is a full bodied wine.

Let your nose take an experimental sniff from the outside of the glass, slowly come closer and sniff from the lip of the glass. Slowly, bring your nose inside the glass and sniff once more. Process what do you smell? Take a small, ample slip and slowly swirl it and roll it around your mouth. Let the wine flow through your taste buds, coating each bud with the goodness of the wine. Try and taste the smooth and silky, soft feeling of the liquid. Pay attention to the sensations and the feelings that flit and travel from your tongue, to your gums, and to your teeth.

Breathe through your mouth and allow the air to carry the wine up from your mouth to the back of your nose. Breathe out through your nostrils. Discover new scents and aromas that have been liberated by your mouth’s movements and the fluids of your tongue.

With your second drink, slurp the wine with air. Note the subtle (or dramatic) change with the wine as you introduce the air with the liquid. Feel for any difference. See if there is any observable development and difference with each of the samples you have ingested.

Types of Cheeses

by Ian Kleine

The world of cheese has well over six hundred different known types today, all of them mostly produced by Wisconsin cheese artisans, makers and researchers. Cheeses can be classified according to shape, body, technique used, and sometimes, appearance. Taste is what also separates one cheese from the other.

Firstly, there is blue cheese. Blue cheese is achieved by veining in specially bred green or blue molds inside the cheese to permeate the insides with a stately flavor, most often described as ‘piquant’. Hard cheese is what can be named for classes such as Parmesan cheese, Romano, and the scalletic Asiago. Well-aged and thick like a brick, its resilient flavor is best used to impart cheesiness on most dishes; from sauces, to snacks and salad. A popular cheese most kids would be familiar to is Pasta Filata, that easily melts when heated thoroughly. This effect is achieved because the whey is stretched thoroughly before it is cast in mold and shaped. Common cheeses in this category are String cheese, Mozzarella and Provolone.

Processed cheese is the next category, a mixture of both freshly made cheese and naturally-aged ripe cheese. It is cooked, processed and mixed evenly with a special salt, after which no more ripening and aging is required (that part was taken care of by the aged cheese in the mixture). Semi-hard cheese is akin to hard cheeses, but their undeniable softness and body makes them not only limited to as food ingredients (like that of hard cheese) but also as a condiment, a food complement, and a snack in itself. The cheese still retains a good kick though, most popular are Cheddar cheese and Edam. Semi-soft cheese is like soft cheese, but they still have shape and body, partly because they are made of whole milk. Montery Jack and Brick cheese fill this category.

Soft cheese and fresh cheese are those that need a container, as they lack body but certainly not in volume. High moisture content, these cheeses are usually eaten right after they are purchased. Cottage, cream and feta take this category. The last one is the soft-ripened cheese, rated for body and flavor. Delicate and tender, Brie and Camembert fit this category.

Lots of cheeses still appear categories within these main categories. But they certainly offer a kaleidoscope view on the wonderful world of cheese.

Kentucky State

by Ian Kleine

The Commonwealth of Kentucky is found in Central East of the United States of the America. The state is one of four that constitutes a commonwealth. It became the fifteenth state to join the Union in 1792. Kentucky is said to have the thirty seventh ranking in terms of state land area, and the twenty sixth in terms of the population.

The other name for this state, as it has been tagged long ago, is the Bluegrass State. This is due to the proliferation of the bluegrass species that seem most abundant in the front lawns of houses and the pastures and the feeding fields in ranches, farms and in rural areas.

Kentucky is a very diverse state in terms of geography, exhibiting forests, mountains, lakes, rivers and caves. Currently, it also holds the title for two of the world’s largest artificial lakes, located in the east of the Mississippi river. The state also houses the largest number of deer per square mile of land. Kentucky is also known for horse breeding, horse racing, tobacco, auto manufacturing, bourbon production, turkeys and coal (having one of the nation’s most active and most productive coalfields certainly helps a lot.)

Kentucky has close to at least ninety thousand miles of estuaries and streams, giving it the ranking of first when it comes to stream systems and design. The artificial lake mentioned was Lake Cumberland and the Kentucky Lake, the former having the largest water volume and the latter for surface area. Aside from this, there are only three natural lakes that exist within the state, all others being man-made or were artificially created or induced.

The state is bordered by three rivers, the Big Sandy River and Tug Fork River in the east, Ohio River up in the north, and the Mississippi River to the west. Inside, Kentucky River, Cumberland River, Green River, Licking River and Tennessee River all pass through the state.
