Kitchen counter stools used to come in one standard height. Now, kitchen counters come in different heights. Counter and bar stool companies are trying to accommodate counter heights other than standard heights. Your job is to decide how tall your kitchen counter stools should be.

The standard height for all bar stools used to be 30 inches. In the past, this was a good height for most kitchens and for most people. With the seat 30 inches off the floor most people were comfortable.

The foot rail location must be comfortable

One aspect of the comfort of the counter stool is where the foot rail is located. On most stools it is about halfway from the floor to the seat. If the person is within the average range of heights and the kitchen counter is at a height of about 40 inches to 44 inches, the halfway rail is pretty comfortable. It prevents the person from trying to reach the floor with his feet, or from being cremped trying to keep his feet on a too-high foot rail.

The height of the seat needs to be compared to the height of the counter top. If you are an average-sized person, you need about 8 inches to 10 inches between them to fit your thighs without squeezing. A 30 iinch seat height and a 40 inch to 44 inch counter height allows for that.

The depth of your pond is a critical consideration for several reasons. Koi get to be big fish. They can grow 3 to 6 inches a year. They need room to swim not only laterally but up and down as well. You need to have a minimum depth of 4 feet. Ideally, 6 to 8 feet will give your fish all the room they will need. This greater depth also helps to stabilize the water temperature being cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter months.

Certainly the bigger the pond, the more fish you can put in it, but there are always limitations. The smallest practical size for a Koi pond is about 6 feet by 9 feet, and 4 feet deep. This size pond will hold about 1600 gallons of water. In calculating the actual depth of your pond, don’t forget that there is usually about six inches from the water line to the top edge of the pond.

The best Koi pond design concept to keep in mind is “keep it simple.” A very simple design will allow for better water movement and thus better filtration. A very complex design may look spectacular, but cause other problems when it comes to keeping it clean. Keeping your pond chemically balanced is critical to the health of your fish. The root structure of orchids is peculiar to them, and all their roots are of a uniform thickness which does not increase with age. The roots will branch, in some species freely. All consist of a central wiry thread which is surrounded by the fleshy, moisture- retaining, part which in turn is coated by the white papery covering, the velamen, which grows as the root extends, leaving only the green growing tip exposed.

Monopodial orchids which grow tall, such as vandal, produce aerial roots from along the rhizome, from a node on the opposite side of a leaf. Here only one root is made and this will extend, rarely branching, for a considerable length. Usually one or two roots will be made each year.

In cultivation these roots can he aerial or underground depending upon the angle at which they are produced. Some may grow horizontally and remain as aerial roots until they come into contact with compost when they will grow into it to become terrestrial.

A small group of orchids consist merely of a small crown from which bursts a mass of tangled roots. These species, among them the genus Microcoelia, have roots which produce chlorophyll.
