The Gibson Les Paul

by Jornando French

When the Fender Telecaster was introduced to the market in 1950, there was a surge in the guitar music world. Subsequent to this introduction, the Gibson Les Paul made its debut. Gibson was and is a leading musical instrument manufacturer. Les Paul was one of the most respected guitarists at the time. Les Paul was known for his innovation in musical instruments and because of this the president of Gibson Company, Ted McCarthy, recruited Les Paul to be a consultant for Gibson.

Les Paul first made a solid body prototype known as The Log. Les Paul had already approached Gibson in 1945 with this prototype but the idea was refused. In 1951, Les Paul and Gibson began working together and Les Pauls innovative idea created a shock wave in the music community. The line of Gibson hollow-body electric guitars inspired ideas to create the Gibson Les Paul. It differed greatly from Fender because the Fender was a solid body and Gibson Les Paul sported a more curved body and a glued-in neck.

The role of Les Paul and Gibson was not without any controversy. One issue was that the president of Gibson Corporation approached Les Paul and asked him for permission to print his name on the headstock of the guitar. He hoped this would increase the sales of the Gibson Les Paul. It was also claimed by McCarthy that they only had discussions with Les Paul regarding the tailpiece and fitting of a maple cap over the mahogany body for increased density and sustain. Les Paul also wanted the new model to have a gold finish but the Gibson gave flame and tiger maple finishes for it to compete with the Fender.

The original Les Paul guitar had just two models– the regular model called the “Goldtop” and the custom model that included upgraded hardware in a black finish. There was a constant improvement seen in the electric pickups, body and hardware patterns which was very pleasing to guitarists. The humbucking pickup completely eliminated the 60-cycle humming that previously inundated the amplified guitars.

The Gibson Les Paul has changed and evolved through the years. The Gibson Les Paul models are Goldtop (1952-1957), Custom (1954-1960), Gibson Les Paul Junior (1954-1960), Gibson Les Paul TV (1955-1960), Gibson Les Paul Special (1955-1960), Gibson Les Paul Standard (1958-1960), Gibson Les Paul SG 1961, Gibson Les Paul Deluxe 1968, Gibson Les Paul Studio 1983, as well as the modern Gibson Les Paul guitars. In the 1960s, prominent rock guitarists began using the Les Paul and this really solidified the reputation of quality and ease of play. This is why the Gibson Les Paul is so popular today with upcoming and established guitarists.

The History of Hydroponics

by Paul J. Easton

History reveals that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon is a big evidence of a hydroponic garden. Moreover, the Aztec Indians in the now Mexico had a system of growing crops on rafts. These rafts are in shallow lakes that you can still see in floating gardens near Mexico City. Therefore, history shows the great significance of hydroponic system of growing plants even in ancient times.

Developments with hydroponics did not however take place in Europe until 1699 when Woodward discovered it. He found out that he can grow plants in a solution of water to which soil had been added.

On the other hand, Liebig, a German scientist, originated using nutrient solutions to study the nutritional requirements of plants in the 1850’s. It was then followed by Sachs in 1860. Knop also did some studies of nutrient elements in water solutions in 1861. They grew plants in nutrients-rich solutions with mineral salts. This does away with the soil as a main requirement for growing crops.

Many researches on the nutritional requirements of plants extended through even until the 1870’s. By 1925, practical applications of hydroponics were being introduced for the vast development in the greenhouse industry.

The next decade followed with the wide growth as scientists grown mindful of the prospective development of producing hydroponically to sustain the food supply with rapid growth in population. Developments remained and the commercial use of hydroponics opened worldwide gradually. But it was the N.F.T. method by Dr Alan Cooper in the 1970’s, along with improved nutritional formulations, that successfully made the hydroponic growing of a wide range of plants commercially possible.

Hydroponics has grown rapidly since the Aztecs and it has become an important method of producing crops in areas of the World where water is precious and land futile for growing plants. by Ian Kleine

Pork, peanut and pine nuts can be appreciated in a festival dedicated to it in Virginia. It is an excellent festival with nothing but only the three p’s, and spending the rest of the day with your family in it, can be described as one of the greater things in life. Welcome to the Pork, Peanut and Pine Festival in Surry County, Virginia.

It is a country festival located in the fields. A family day with nothing but nature, straight drinks, Blue Grass and country style music in the air, and the afternoon sun beating down on you and your family with a warm and comfortable glow. You can find yourself walking lazily under the shades of tall cedar trees that line the River Road. If you’re not comfortable with the sun, there are shades and refreshment stands for your enjoyment and comfort as well.

The barnyard in town is the hub for all exhibits regarding pork, peanut and pine. The festival is mostly headed on weekends so there’s no rush to get right back to work the next day. Professional Appearance 3

by Ian Kleine

Honesty is the best policy. When dealing with other craftsmen, either be quiet or say the whole truth. Do not speak half-truths, for they are but whole lies. Honesty also has a big impact on first impressions, as mentioned. Be honest, but don’t be brutal. There is a big difference between honesty, and being tactless. Have etiquette first above anyone else.

Stay inside the space that you paid for, and make sure your booth, table or space is free from gaudy decorations or cumbersome things that could drop into your mate’s table. Make sure it doesn’t encroach nor does it distract. This includes strong scents, loud music, or bright, painful colors.

Stay the whole time that you had paid for. Most buyers usually stay up until the last minute for discounts or because they had just taken off from work. The last hour of the day might be the most stressful you will ever have, but this will also be the prime opportunity for you to have potential clients far more prospective than that which you might have encountered during the day.

Common sense and positive attitude will surely help you in your endeavor for business and keep you away from harm. Avoid negativity and harshness during the day. You need all your pep and your good side to face and talk with both clients, customers and co-peers. Be in the good side of most of your colleagues and recieve win and profit. Help others and expect help from them when you most need it.

Always greet the day and everybody with a smile. Keep an upbeat mood, and be full of positive energy. Think big, create big and win big. Be who you are and be brimming with energy as much as possible (but not to the point where you can be downright annoying and irritating).

A Day in a Flea Market

by Mercie Hallow

Flea markets are places where you can buy cheap and second hand goods. Flea market vendors occupy spaces from small tables containing a few items to large stalls with varying goods. Flea markets usually have concessionaires and sometimes live music or entertainment in order to enrich and heighten the experience. The term got its name from the French word Marche aux puces where the first flea market has reportedly appeared. It was in alleyways of Paris that the idea was brought to life and was adapted by many countries. Hence, flea markets or swap meets are seen throughout the world.

It was also reported that flea markets usually contains counterfeited items and pirated movies. Designer labels in bags, apparel, shoes, accessories and watches are deemed to be fakes when it is sold at flea markets for very low prices. The Silk Street in China is famous for selling counterfeited items and pirated movies in DVDs and VCDs. Police officials frequently raid this place in accordance to an anti-piracy and anti-counterfeiting rule in China. Apart from all its negative issues, flea markets are ideal shopping haven if one is looking for affordable items.

Indeed, flea markets are still being patronized nowadays because in here one can find unique and coveted finds in cheap prices. Some sellers sell their own second hand items in a plan to gain extra cash and get rid of some stuffs in their home that they no longer use.
