The Best Flowers For Window Boxes

by Amy Nutt

Window boxes can add some much needed gardening space to small homes or perk up a window in any size house. They give the apartment dweller with no deck a place to garden and give the illusion of bringing the outdoors inside. Choosing what type of flowers to plant in your window box really depends on where your box is located and the type of blooms that you want. Take a look at where your window box is, or where you would like it to be and note how much sun it gets. This will help you determine which flowers to plant.

Size Matters

When you are plant shopping for your window box, you want to look for any type of plant that does not grow very tall so that you don’t obstruct the view from the window. Decide if you want to place new flowers in the box with each season or have leaves that look good all year round and choose your foliage accordingly. Try and stay away from plants that need a large root base because in a window box, these types can become easily root bound and either take over other plants or die.

Building Depth

When you are planting your box, try and build some depth in it by planting vine type plants such as ivy that spill out of the box and hang down. Behind these types of foliage, plant the lowest type plants and build your way up to the taller plants in the back. This will create a look that is 3 dimensional and give it a more professional feel.

The Best Flower Options

Some of the more popular types of blooms for window boxes include marigolds, petunias, pansies, geraniums and begonias. These are very seasonal however, and need to be replaced in the winter with greenery such as green hydrangea and bittersweet to keep the planters looking fresh and alive. Other popular plants include herbs, basil, chives, mint and thyme are all good ones which can be planted in a kitchen window box for a quick and flavorful addition to any meal.

Essentially, you want seedlings that will stay fairly small, so as not to outgrow the space. It’s also important to look for an abundance of color and long lasting blooms so you will have plenty of bright petals to enjoy throughout the season. Some blossoms come and go so quickly that it’s not even worth having them in your window.

For the lowest maintenance look while still enjoying a beautiful window, mix and match your choices. Pick some plants that have beautiful foliage that stands on its own and add in some long lasting flowers like marigolds or forget-me-nots for a splash of color. This will let you have a pretty planter even when the blooming season is over.

Window boxes offer a simple way to get into gardening no matter where you live and can add a homey touch to an otherwise dull room simply by including some beautiful flowers.

Landscape Garden A Pleasure Not A Job

by Keith Markensen

You are lucky

It will soon be the “Oh, you are lucky” season. those of you who play in the dirt, landscape and garden know what I mean. When the landscape begins to share its colorful flowers and roses start blooming, the perennial remarks begin:

“Oh, you are lucky to have such roses” “Oh, you are lucky to have such rich soil” “Oh, you are lucky that you don’t have weeds” ” “Oh, you are lucky that you have the only yard without rocks” “Your garden is beautiful, you must have a green thumb”

One day last summer I had an overdose of these remarks. The next person was going to be told that I did not have a green thumb, only two grimy hands, no fingernails, two calloused knees and an aching back. Luck had nothing to do with my garden, it was the result of plain, old hard work.

For two years we hauled away rocks and hauled in soil; and yet we had only a small front and side yard. I was planning to be very sarcastic, but I was lucky. The next person told me I was crazy to let a few flowers make a drudge out of me. Flowers were fine but not worth the work, I was silly to give up my usual weekend activities of sports on the TV just to work in the yard.

l never felt so sorry for anyone in all my life. How can anyone look at a flower garden and see nothing but work?

After she left I thought things over and decided I am lucky to have a place to garden and time to work in the yard. I am able to work outdoors in my front and backyard and consider the landscape garden a pleasure not a job.

When looking at the flowers on my garden I see friends; this friend gave me that plant, these came out of another friends garden, that solar garden light was chosen by a close friend. We have made new friends through our garden. Working in the yard has brought me better health and peace of mind. I am happy when moving rocks with my little red wheelbarrows or remembering the time when I met a good old friend who helped me put on some solar garden lights.

We have fun with our garden. We had just finished “improving our soil with organic matter” when a woman asked what we did. Upon telling her, she wanted to go ask her “yard man” to do that for her. All we could tell her was “good luck.” I am lucky, remembering the good and the amusing events of digging in the dirt; the beauty and the fragrance but not the work.

I cant think of a more pleasant way to spend a winter evening than to read and dream about the garden and am truly wide array of flowers – all kinds, sizes, shapes, scents and colors, their histories and even their names intrigue me. So the next time someone says, “Oh, you are lucky,” I shall answer, “I certainly am.

New Names Of Roses And Hybrids

by Steven Karback

Better Now

When the term hybrid tea was coined, it was used for roses that set a new standard for reliable repeat bloom. But progress in continuous bloom has far surpassed many of the original hybrid teas. Indeed, our progress is such that most recent introductions are properly called continous bloomers.

This point is stressed because it is a fact that the public often calls continuous blooming roses, monthly roses (hybrid tea) but my roses are so fortified by Rosa gallica that, in this climate it is a shame to call them monthly (hybrid tea). If you can find a well grown rose hybrid minus bud or bloom during the blooming season I will eat my words.

Progress ” Past and Future

Hybridizers will be the first to welcome simplification of names. For we realize how (genetically) wrong they are. The die-hards will be the exhibitors who, most often are not so interested in horticulture.

They will say, “Look at the classifications of 100 years ago and be thankful for the improvement we have.” That is just like telling a man who is sitting on four sand burs not to move or complain because once there was a man forced to sit on ten sand burs! My great-grandfather rode a horse until he was offered a Model T Ford.

We might say, “Look how his problems were simplified-and be thankful.” Keep his Model T and be thankful you dont have to curry a horse or walk.

Its been that long since we did much of anything with our “names” but progress sweeps on and solutions to names erased most of the confusions. Unlike various rose pest solutions we no longer need the word hybrid tea as a synonym for everblooming (its only current value) and, for present day roses, hybrid perpetual is not fitting.

Grandiflora only adds to confusion. Floribundas are being bred with large flowered roses – where do we draw the line? I offer a simple solution – dont, just erase it. Why not call all everblooming bush garden roses simply: (large flowered) (small flowered) roses?

Every rose is an individual and always has called for an individual description. Lets hope they always will.

Youd have a difficult time finding anyone who wouldnt agree that setting goals is really the best way to achieve your dreams. However, sometimes setting goals is easier said than done.

In many cases we tend to assume that those who actually reach their goals, financial or otherwise, are just lucky, or caught a break. But, in reality, its more likely that those who consistently accomplish their goals have a plan for their success ” and they work their plan. So, how can we set goals, and use our environment to help us achieve those goals? Well, one thing that Ive done recently for some of my clients is to transform their environment so that their goals are ever present. Here are some things that may help you internalize your goals.

1. Written Words. Written goals are more likely to come true than those that aren’t. A great way to visualize and remember your goals are to put them into words. A great way to do this is to add a few inspiring words to the walls of your office, workspace, and home. This can be achieved simply, inexpensively, and without damaging the walls by using vinyl wall lettering, which you can purchase online at websites such as vinylwalllettering.com. Words such as DREAM, INSPIRE, PASSION, etc. followed by a customized quote can act as a reminder of the goals you have set for yourself.

2. Imagery. The power of imagery over our minds is undisputed by almost all psychologists. Seeing is believing. So, make sure you see your goals. If you want a new car, set a picture of what you want as your backdrop, or rent the car you want for a daydrive it.make it yours. Seeing really is believing. If a new home is your goal, go look at new homesthe kind you want. Find one, go and take a tourimagine yourself there.

3. Work . How many of us can move a mountain with our mindI mean literally, without taking action. Nobody I know can. Accomplishing goals takes work. You have to make the effort. Once again, a well thought out set of goals is only a dream if youre not willing to put for the effort to make them a reality.

So how does this tie into Feng Shui? It ties into Feng Shui because according to Feng Shui principles your environment directly impacts all facets of your life, as well as your effectiveness in achieving your goals and purposes. The principles stated above help you create an environment that reflects and reinforces the goals and desires you have, which meshes perfectly with Feng Shui principles. Just like the Chinese and Japanese, who often hang banners in their homes and places of business to remind them of their goals and aspirations, vinyl lettering in the form of wall words can serve as a reminder of our goals and dreams. I have used Japanese Kanji characters along with inspirational quotes from the vinyl lettering site vinylcraftlettering.com, and the results have always been inspiringly beautiful.

Tomatoes are currently the most popalar vegetable grown from vegetable gardens in the United States. The reason for this is that they grow easily and can thrive under harsh conditions. Patio Sets complete any living space in your home. Inside or outside, somewhere on your premises there will be a perfect space for a patio set to bring that feeling of ‘home’.

Patio sets usually consist of one table and a set of matching chairs. The actual number of chairs can vary depending on the size of the table but 4 to 6 seating arrangements are the most common. Make sure you match the size of the table to the space in your garden or your own specific needs. Patio sets are generally built for outdoor use so the majority will be made from metal materials or wood. Some patio sets are complimented with cushions to provide extra comfort, something that is recommended for hard outdoor furniture.

Beginning with a full set of outdoor furniture guarantees that you will have a good match of materials and styles across all of the pieces. This means that you won’t have to hassle with building the set on your own one piece at a time. Variety abounds when it comes to finding a matched set so finding the right combination of style and price should be pretty easy to accomplish.

Remember, you have to know what you need before going to the shop to pick out a patio set. The range is often so great that you can become confused by all the choices available. Think about space, size, material, color and the type of weather in your area before going out to look at your options. Knowing what you want beforehand can really save you a headache or two!

There are a couple of different types of sets that you can choose from and determining your primary objective is important to make the right selection. If you intend to serve meals outdoors then a dining set is an optimum choice. If your primary goal is to entertain, then a conversation set might be a better choice. A conversation patio set is a coffee table with appropriate sized chairs. The shorter chair height and the slightly reclined chairs provide for a more relaxed atmosphere.

If you need to handle large numbers of family and friends then a very large table with extra chairs works well. Adding a second table that can be matched up to the first is another option if you only need to accommodate large groups every once in a while. Folding chairs that match the rest of the furniture are easy additions that typically store well when they are not being used.

Once you get your new outdoor furniture home, make sure you keep up on the cleaning and maintenance. Bare spots on metal will rust, stains on most types of materials will become permanent if not treated quickly and wood will require regular sealing if you want to protect its original coloring. With just a little TLC your patio set will last you for many years of outdoor enjoyment.
