Speed reading exercises aim to increase the rate of reading without affecting retention or comprehension of the text. There are many different methods for speed reading but the essential is that they all focus on a balance between speed and comprehension. Another thing; they all necessitate a certain amount of practice.

Speed readers go about their thing in a variety of ways like not vocalizing all words, making out words without recognizing every letter in each word and quickly skimming through the text. Each reader will have methods that come more in a more instinctual way and they’ll unveil themselves with practice and time. Overall, the goal is to get your eyes to move at a faster rate and recognize words quickly.

Skimming is the way a reader can search visually through a text for clues to what the meaning of the article might be. In general, skimming is not considered the most effective method for texts that are denser in information because it doesn’t lead to a great comprehension. Oppositely, this method is effective to grasp the essential meaning of a text.

Meta guiding is another method, perhaps the most widely taught, that speeds up the reading process. It consists of guiding the eye along the lines of text using another pointer like a finger or a pen. This method speeds up the movement of the eye and subdues subvocalization.

A basic speed reading exercise consists of using your finger to pace yourself through a text and accelerate the rate at which you would normally move your eyes across a line. Moving your finger gradually faster will force your eyes to recognize words quickly and hence accelerate your speed of reading.

There is a second exercise possible to learn speed reading skills and that consists of skimming over the text and look for key words tying into the meaning of every sentence. This exercise implies reading in blocks and there are other more complicated exercises that repeat this method.

This third exercise needs a little bit of preparation time and some index cards. Blocks of words, phrases or sentence fragments will need to be written on the index cards. The exercise itself consists of reading what is written on the index cards instead of reading an integral text. During a few minutes, one must quickly scroll through the index cards while recognizing the set of words that are on every card. In practicality, this increases the recognition of words and accelerates the speed of reading fragments of sentences.

Each and every one of these speed reading exercises requires some time to be invested in order to actually work. For optimal conditions, the reader should have plenty of rest and optimal level of concentration while practicing these exercises. It takes time and a lot of practice before a reader will really increase his speed. Reading really fast is possible while keeping a good level of retention and comprehension.

Speed reading can be a great tool for the academic or the professional world alike. It is fairly easy to learn and doesn’t cost a thing. All that is needed is a few speed reading exercises, some patience and a little determination.

our time is priceless. learn how to read better and faster and read those speed reading tips and you will learn how to improve your reading speed quickly with few speed reading exercises.

Home Schooling and the Family

by Colin Jones

If a survey by the National Center For Education Statistics is to be believed, roughly 1.1 million children took home schooling in 2005 alone. That’s a great deal of children. Once upon a time, homeschooling used to be a radical statement – something like a declaration of independence.

It was the (right-wing|conservative Christians who advocated homeschooling in the 1980’s and legalized it in every State. But the average homeschooler of today is not religiously motivated.

Later surveys indicate that parents are quite fed up with the public school system where a lot of the learning is superficial and compulsory. They are also concerned about the negative environment in school, ranging from drugs and abuse to negative peer pressure.

Because of this, we have a surprising mix of people who form the homeschooling world of today. They cut across all religious creeds and all regional borders. Their main aim is providing meaningful and productive education through a method that strengthens the bond between the various members of the family.

These families all have one main thing in common – a long enduring commitment to the sanctity of childhood. The children of these families are accorded a primary position. Many believe, and, I think, rightly so, that home schooling allows parents to bring up their kids in a more natural and caring environment.

Public schools can make a child nervous, diffident and downright mean. Children who get their education at home are protected from these damaging, negative influences until they attain an age where they can withstand them.

Home-schooling draws the whole family into the almost religious task of teaching. Everyone is put to work. Both the parents together form a bond with the children. Any experience can be turned into an educational experience. Both the parents are aware of exactly what is going into their child’s education.

Parents also have a greater control over the type of religious and moral values that the child is taught. Even watching a movie together can become an educational experience. Visits to the libraries, zoos, museums and other places become educational as well as recreational.

A home-schooling family is primarily dependent on the income of one earning member. That means that often spending has to be curtailed and proper planning of expenditure is necessary. This helps to bring the family members together and everybody gets involved in the task of saving money.

Merely having a parent at home to supervise, to nurture and to care for the children brings with it a lot of love and caring. Even the husband chips in and there is just no room for complacency.

Yes OK, problems still do sometimes occur, and there will be a lot of misgivings in your mind, but when you know that your children can always count on you, and your kids know it too, then homeschooling becomes a very rewarding experience.

Full Review Of Grow Taller 4 Idiots

by Rodney Williams

Grow Taller 4 Idiots is a book which details the many facets of growing taller naturally, and this review will break down some of the finer points of the book. The first thing you’ll notice of course is the title, which is an obvious play on the “for Dummies” series of books.

After the introductory section, the meaty section of the book kicks off with a look at nutrition, and its role in growth. We get a nice look at a large number of different vitamins and minerals, and some of the ways in which they help our bodies. This is a section you would probably want to return to many times, when looking for information on vitamins.

Next up is a look at posture problems which may be holding you back, or down as it is. The section is not overly robust, but the exercises later in the book help flesh out this section with its useful remedies for these problems. A few helpful diagrams are present in this section as well.

Next we have a look at sleeping, and the ailments that poor positioning while sleeping could develop. One remedy detailed in the book is to give up the use of pillows, or at the very least give up the use of large and/or multiple pillows, to improve the angle of your back while sleeping.

For how long we sleep each day, it certainly is easy to understand that even slightly poor sleeping habits could have a dramatic effect on our posture and height.

The last major section is devoted to exercises, a major component of growing taller naturally. This section is extremely detailed, with multiple diagrams present to illustrate the methods being taught. Probably the best section of the book, and like the nutrition segment, this one is worth returning to multiple times as well.

After this last major section comes a small bonus section with some useful tips that wouldn’t fit in any other sections.

Grow Taller 4 Idiots is a book that should be looked into by anyone serious about undertaking a regime with the aim of growing taller. It has plenty of useful information that you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere, all neatly contained in one book.

Some Tips On Buying Used College Textbooks

by Greg Shuey

We all know how buying used college textbooks save a lot of money. It helps you keep up with your lessons even though you have a limited budget. Used college textbooks allow the not-so-well-off students to have a shot at finishing their education in the long run.

When you buy used college textbooks, there are some things you need to do first to make sure that you are not getting ripped off. Here are some of them:

1. Search the Internet for online and offline bookstores that specialize in selling used textbooks. This will save you time, money, and effort. Instead of going around town in search of a good store, you will know where you’re headed at before stepping out of the house.

2. Ask friends or people you know who were previously in the same course you are currently taking. Chances are they used the same textbooks. You can buy it from them at a low price. The added bonus here is the notes scribbled on the pages or highlighted texts.

3. Check out the university or college bookstores if they sell used college textbooks. The ones they sell can be cheaper than those sold at bookstores.

4. Before paying for the book, check first for torn or missing pages. A textbook with torn and missing pages is of no use.

5. Look for better bargains. It wouldn’t hurt to look at another store that sells cheaper used college textbooks. You’ll never know what you can find.

These tips will surely help you find the textbook you need. Remember though that you should not expect a nice-looking book. It’s normal for used college textbooks to look worn. As long as it’s still readable and is not missing important pages, then you’re good to go. The important thing here is that you will have a reference material you can use to study your lessons. How they look is not important; it’s the inside that matters.

Do You Need A Kindle 2? Yes.

by Joseph W. Risinko

Kindle 2 units are arriving all over the US, as Amazon not only keeps to their delivery schedule but, in some cases, beats it to the punch. Kindle 2 Keyboard: I think the Kindle 2 keyboard is a massive improvement over the original Kindle (not that I owned the original Kindle), but I find that its not very user friendly, at least not for me. Kindle 2 is very slim and Apple-esque.

The redesigned Kindle 2 ebook reader got favorable reviews at the launch in New York City. [1] The connectivity needed to download books and browsing certain other sites is free of charge: The Kindle Store enables you to download, display and use on your Device a variety of digitized electronic content, such as books, subscriptions to magazines, newspapers, journals and other periodicals, blogs, RSS feeds, and other digital content. With the new Text-to-Speech feature, Kindle 2 can read every book, blog, magazine, and newspaper out loud to you.

The Kindle 2 is exactly what people want in a digital reader ” simple, sleek design. The Kindle 2 is BUILT to be a reader, and as such, does a great job. The newest Reader is fast, fast and faster.

With Kindle 2 Amazon kept everything readers love about the original Kindle”the convenience of reading what you want, when you want it, the immediacy of getting a book wirelessly delivered in less than 60 seconds, and Kindle 2s ability to disappear in your hands so you can get lost in the authors words. The Kindle 2 actually feels comfortable in my hand now”unlike the original Kindle which is much to angular and sharp-edged to be comfortable after an hour of reading. You will be able to eat with both hands while reading your current read.

Like some other electronic paper products, the Kindle 2 uses “e-ink” technology, which serves to make the letters and words on the screen look more printlike in their appearance. A lot of people, when they first see the screen, are genuinely impressed. The 600-by-800-resolution screen is the same size, measuring 6 inches; but now, packing the latest E-Ink technology, it gives you 16 shades of gray versus the 4 shades available on the original Kindle.

Wireless: 3G wireless lets you download books right from your Kindle, anytime, anywhere; no monthly fees, service plans, or hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots. Kindle was an interesting concept, and its ability to load books quickly and wirelessly was innovative- but as the author states, it seems much more likely that other devices will step in and do what the Kindle merely suggests: a better screen, better interface, and perhaps best of all much less DRM on the content. I love the wireless features, dictionary, electronic ink, etc. Especially with the wireless capability to get what I wanted on demand.

The availability of books in the Kindle format or any other eBook format is at the discretion of the publisher and/or author, NOT Amazon. However, I think that the advantages of eBooks over printed ones are great enough that the main factor affecting sales will be the popularity of reading vs that of listening to music.

Im a HUGE news junkie, and I would love to subscribe to the New York Times, the Washington Post, and a host of other faltering newspapers on my new Kindle 2. The weeks that I have spent with my Kindle 2 has made it clear that it is miles ahead of the competition. With an 800×600 resolution e-ink screen and unlimited free Internet access, the Kindle 2 makes a compelling choice for anyone who enjoys reading.
