Coughing is usually accompanied with common cold and flu, and results in acute pain and dryness in throat. It is important to seek suitable medical help and get it treated appropriately.

Coughs occur because the defence mechanisms in the body propel them so as to clear the passage of air in the throat which provides air to the lungs. They are not just an outcome of physiological problems but can also occur due to psychological reasons. The former is caused when the cough results from external irritants like dust, cigarette smoke, environmental pollutants etc or because of some ailment. The other types of coughing are the ones triggered psychologically and are usually habitual. This kind of coughing habit is known as Streruphilia and does not have any root cause in physical problems.

Cough can often be acute or chronic, depending on its typical nature and on the basis of the period for which it lasts and its intensity. Acute coughs which continue for not greater than 3 weeks at a stretch can be caused because of both infectious and non-infectious diseases. Examples of physical ailments of one time nature that result in painful coughs are pneumonia and sinusitis and examples of ailments causing chronic coughs are bronchitis and asthma.

Consulting a good physician is essential to get to the root cause of the complication and taking appropriate treatment for complete recovery. Antibiotics, Antihistamines and cough suppressants are some of the medications often prescribed by the physicians to provide relief from acute coughs. In a few cases, particularly chronic ailments, the treatment for cough can last for prolonged periods, even months, to fully cure or suppress the problem.

Like any other serious medical complication, taking necessary precautions to stay away from cough is more sensible than having to seek treatment for it when your condition gets bad. Keeping away from smoking, exercising daily and eating a balanced diet that builds immunity and makes one healthy can help prevent coughs.
