Hypnosis - The Truth Behind All The Myths
Hypnosis and its arm, hypnotherapy, have been the focus of a lot of myths created by popular imagination. Some consider them to be some type of spell while others hesitate to even acknowledge them. Following are some of the popular myths about hypnosis and the truth behind them.
There is no practice of occult involved in hypnosis. It borders more on the science of psychology and is very simple to practice for anyone who is prepared to learn it. The authenticity of hypnosis is doubted even by individuals who have seen it casting its spell on subjects. They hold that the people who have undergone hypnosis are mentally not strong enough to withstand the impact of the practitioner. But that is simply not the truth. Even mentally strong people can fall under the charms of a specialist hypnosis practitioner.
That hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness is another misconception that has been doing the rounds. An individual under hypnosis does not get segregated from the outside world, but remains completely conscious of the goings on around him. That person is just in a calm state where the concentration levels are very high and the person can receive suggestions easily.
Another myth, which has been propagated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can work on merely 5% of the human population. The scientists are to some extent true in their own way, because they tried hypnotising the group by the same hypnosis technique without acknowledging individual differences in nature and temperament. Hypnosis can’t be oversimplified like that and clicks only if there are different approaches for different personality styles.
Many people take hypnosis to be a variant of meditation. However, interaction between the subject and the practitioner is paramount in hypnosis, while meditation is like a communion with the self without any external interaction involved. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. Trance is again a state of mind sans any communication, whereas communication forms the very basis of the hypnosis method.
A majority of people believe that it is impossible to bring about alterations in one’s looks and conduct through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis certainly cannot transform the body in unnatural ways. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and chain smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.
If a person falls for all the wrong notions that prevail regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself burn the bridge to a better and healthier life.
